The actual work is a treacherous and lonely road. Frodo understood this. Not enough credit given to Samwise Gamgee though. He had mastered the self. He was at peace with self, and he was available, empowered, and impassioned to assist Frodo on his journey. .
.
His name means simple-minded. That is a misnomer because it denotes a very shallow connotation. He was child-like in his understanding of life. He wasn't bogged down with over-thinking and was aware of his own weaknesses. How can that be shallow if that is what we should strive for? . What inspired this type of love? "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." . And Sam did! And when he faced the darkness with his simple-mind, he could not be beaten. He was the kind of friend Frodo needed...the only kind. . . In our effort to do the self-work, we tend to fight the desire to share that with another. And we can get so hung up on the failures of others, we fail to see our own. And it's this co-dependcy that keeps us from progress. Instead of looking out...for the right person...look in...and be the right person.
